Great stuff!  Reblogging for people who’ve asked me about finding historical clothing references online.

This is a part of an assignment for class. This is just the first cowboy for my animation.

Answering both of these at the same time.
I use both Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop (I have CS6) to do a piece. I’ll sometimes use Illustrator. I sketch out things traditionally, using a non-photo blue pencil, a no.2 wood pencil, a mechanical pencil for detail. For paper, I use regular old printing paper or a sketchbook.
As far brushes go in SAI, I usually do lineart details using the Ink pen with no textures, on “simple circle”, and the minimum szie set to 0%. For color, since I do more cell shading, I usually brush in my shade using the pen tool or the ink pen tool (either works). I add a second layer of shade using either the marker (with the blending set between 20 and 90, it varies) or the airbrush on 10% density/opacity.
I can probably explain this better in a tutorial. I’ll try to work on one this weekend, I have an After Effects project for class that I want to finish by Friday.
